Our town is filled with athletes. Villagers spend their weekends hiking or biking in the beautiful peaks that surround our town in the summer and skiing or snowboarding down our mountains in the winter.
With all of the physical activity that the citizens of town partake in, it is necessary to find a food product that is delicious and healthy.
Everyone has their favorite snack, and for those who like granola a new option has hit the counters of the Village Market. Love Grown Foods, a company founded by Madeleine “Maddy” D'Amato, a 2005 graduate of Aspen High School, and her significant other, Alex Hasulak, have three flavors of their granola available for your enjoyment.
Love Grown Foods began in January 2009 and the two partners had their granola on store shelves in May 2009. The idea of starting a health food company began during the couple's junior year in college while studying one night in the library.
Love Grown Foods was on their minds during the rest of their time at the University of Denver, and they pursued their dream of providing healthy food to active people by experimenting with recipes. When the couple graduated, more of their time was dedicated to this endeavor.
Through their company, D'Amato and Hasulak hope to aid active people by providing great tasting and delicious food while also educating consumers about the importance of pure ingredients. Whole grains, Omega 3's and low glyceimic sweeteners need to find their way into the diet of healthy people, and both Maddy and Alex believe they can do this through their business and their wholesome and tasty granola.
Where does the name Love Grown come from? While the company was still in its planning stages, D'Amato's one request to Alex was that Love find its way into the company's name. Her reasoning: “Everything tastes better when you bake with love!”
Love Grown Foods has its eyes on growing within Colorado as well as across the nation. New products including trail mix and nut and seed butters will hopefully find their way into grocery stores as well. The granola can be found statewide in 114 City Markets and King Soopers, as well as Clark's Markets throughout the state, Village Markets, Good Health in Glenwood Springs and Vitamin Cottage/Natural Grocers. The couple also distributes their products to Specialty Food/Cheese Shop, Peach's Corner Café, Parallel 15 and the University of Denver bookstore.
D'Amato and Hasulak would also like to see their goods in Whole Foods – because they believe they are on a similar mission of spreading health and education – and smaller chains such as Sprouts and Sunflower Market.
The couple say they are having fun running their business, with Alex handling the logistical side and Maddy taking care of the cooking, marketing and “spreading the love.” They do most of the work by themselves and it is easy to taste the love that is put into their granola with every bite.
