For the third straight year, Snowmass Village was home to enough eager young ballplayers to field a youth boy's baseball team. This year the team comprised 13- to15-year-olds who wanted to play the game of summer.
The dimensions of our Village ball field are not regulation for this league, so the Villagers play their home games on the Lower Moore baseball field at Aspen High School, which is the same field they will play on if they compete in the sport in high school.
Despite playing through a variety of weather conditions this summer, the team attained great success. The first two games of the home season were a double-header played against two different teams from Eagle Valley. The Snowmass Villagers came out ready to start the season strong, but failed in their first game to outscore their opponents, taking a tough loss. Game two turned out better for the boys from Snowmass, as they won a pitching duel to bring their home record to 1-1.
After breaking even with Eagle Valley, Snowmass was scheduled to play New Castle a week later. Our unpredictable summer weather delivered rain showers. Rain pounded the field, threatening to force a rainout.
Both teams persevered — even as home plate began to resemble a puddle to splash in, instead of the batter's box. Snowmass proved up to the challenge of playing in the cold, wet, windy, conditions and pulled off another victory. In the last inning, everyone was rewarded with blue skies and a rainbow.
The weather proved accommodating rather than intimidating for the final home game of the season. Amassing an early lead, the Snowmass team never trailed and paced themselves to a gratifying victory. Game time temperature was 69 degrees and a beautiful Colorado setting was the backdrop for this Snowmass Village triumph over Rifle.
Over the three years I have been umpiring the Snowmass Village youth baseball program, the players have improved in every aspect of the game. The participants' baseball acumen improves and each member contributes to their team. This accomplishment could not be achieved if it were not for the encouragement and guidance the players receive from their family members who coach, assist and watch as their sons make progress and enjoy the game of baseball.
Alpine Bank was responsible for the uniforms that the players wore and deserve a big thank you for all of the contributions they have made this summer to youth sports. The local team provided a great deal of excitement for all who came out to watch their games this season.
The biggest achievement was the great teamwork that the team demonstrated and the positive manner that all the players shared with one another. Every team will prepare for a game differently; one characteristic of this team was, whether rain or shine, they always approached the game with a smile and a positive attitude.
