On Saturday, May 29, the largest graduating class in Aspen High School's history will take the stage at the Benedict Music Tent. A total of 25 of the 138 seniors who will walk down the aisle to accept their diploma from outgoing Principal Charlie Anastas live in Snowmass Village (in addition, exchange student Emine Geylan has been residing with the Kornasiewicz family).
What are their plans for the future? The Snowmass Sun polled the students, asking about their extracurricular activities, favorite high school memories, summer jobs and path to higher education. Here's some of what we learned:
Melanie Cohen said she enjoyed the Outreach Club, Health Careers Club and her time spent volunteering at Temple and Aspen Elementary School. Moving into a new high school half-way through can be a scary thing, but Melanie's experience was positive. “I made great friends in Aspen after moving here my junior year.”
She will be heading soon to college at the University of Central Florida, where she plans on heading down the Biology/Pre-Med track. Rather than wait until the fall, Melanie will start with the summer session at school.
J Daly will spend his summer in Aspen working at a few restaurants, he said, before enrolling in the University of Northern Colorado, where he will pursue a business degree.
During his high school years, J enjoyed tennis and skiing. His favorite Ex.Ed. trip was San Diego, where he took surfing lessons.
Favorite memories? “I had a lot of fun hanging out with friends,” he said.
Like J Daly, Nicky Fuller loved surfing in San Diego for Ex.Ed., though “all (of the Ex. Ed. trips) were a lot of fun,” he said.
Team sports played a large role in Nicky's high-school career, as he competed in basketball, lacrosse and football. Nicky also has great memories of going to the state championship in basketball. He'll continue to play sports at Ft. Lewis College where he wants to study athletic training. In the meantime, this summer you can find Nicky working at the Snowmass Bakery.
For Claire Kornasiewicz, sports played a huge role during high school, as she was a member of the softball team and the girls U-19 hockey team.
A volunteer at Aspen Valley Hospital, Claire worked in the ER and the surgery department.
A trip to Hollywood to study special effects and learn about the industry counted as her favorite Ex.Ed. trip. In terms of high school experiences, “working the fly rail in the AHS musical ‘Wizard of Oz'” during senior year was definitely one of Claire's great memories.
She has been accepted at Santa Clara University where Claire will enroll as a biology major. She'd like to study Pre-Med or marine biology.
This summer, look for Claire at Alpine Bank in the Village. Before she jumps into a summer of work, Claire will enjoy a fishing trip with family members in Ontario, Canada and a camping trip with friends to Ridgway (near Telluride).
The founder of the Gay/Straight Alliance at school, AJ Palacio was also active in “a lot of theatre” plus guitar and cooking clubs. This summer, AJ will continue the love of stage by performing in Theatre Aspen's “Aladdin.” His choice of Ohio's Oberlin College seems a natural fit. He plans on studying theatre and dance there.
One of AJ's favorite high-school memories was being cast in the lead role of Lieutenant Joe Cable in “South Pacific.” He also said “being with friends” was a memory he'll hold near and dear to his heart. His Ex. Ed. bike tour to the Bay Area stands out as well. “So much fun, it was just great.”
Nicolas Porcaro spent his junior year abroad in Palermo, Sicily, which provided plenty of great memories and an interesting re-entry. “It was challenging to get back to school work. Here, we have a lot more written tests and learning in class,” he said. During Nicolas' year abroad he participated in Rotoract, a Rotary service club. Back home he enjoyed the Outdoor Adventure Club and the Big Buddy Program.
When asked about his favorite Ex. Ed. trip, he listed “all of them,” biking in the Sedona area, a bike tour in the Bay Area and the San Juan River tour.
Nicolas has a full summer on tap. First, it's off to Hawaii for a month with a friend before settling in to work at the Snowmass Club. Come autumn, he will go north, to the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. “I want to study earth or ocean sciences.”
Conor Hansen played competitive golf and was part of a hockey team during high school. This summer he plans on honing his golf game as well as looking for a job. In August, he will enroll at the University of Colorado in Boulder, where his major is yet undecided.
Conor's favorite Ex.Ed. trips took him to the Black Hills and the Grand Tetons, he said.
Returning to her home city of New Orleans, where she was born and raised, is on Nicole Argeros' agenda. She has been accepted at Tulane University, where she has an undecided major. To help earn some money for school, she will work this summer at the Gap.
Dance Team, Dance Progressions, Action in Africa and the Outreach Club were prominent during Nicole's high school years. She also loved dancing during half-time at the football games. Actually, “My whole senior year has been great with my friends.”
Stevie Rae Jarrell has been accepted to the University of San Francisco, where her major could be either art or business. She plans on spending the summer traveling, enjoying a senior trip to Mexico with friends before heading to Hawaii and Chicago and Louisiana to visit grandparents.
Stevie played soccer and was a member of the swim team while at Aspen High School; she also “took a lot of art classes, especially ceramics.” Her most memorable Ex.Ed. trip? A yoga retreat on a houseboat at Lake Mead.
Fans of Aspen High School Skiers' football will remember some of the great plays made this year by Walker Moriarty. He cited varsity football, baseball and basketball as some of his favorite athletic memories. “I loved playing sports and being in the state basketball championships,” Walker said.
His favorite Ex.Ed. trip took him to Puerto Rico.
A National Honor Society member, Walker has been accepted to Dickinson College in Carlisle, Penn., where he will play football. His major is yet undecided.
Following a trip to the Bahamas with friends, Walker will help take care of kids for three families this summer and will also work for the event planning company Rocky Mountain Connection.
A big fan of fiction writing (she wrote for the AHS literary magazine Nepsa Merge), Nicole Smith is currently working at Explore Booksellers. “In two weeks, my whole family will be moving to Chicago,” so her summer will be spent “packing and unpacking for the move and then repacking and packing for college.”
In the fall, Nicole will enroll at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., where she plans to major in creative writing. “My goal is to go to grad school and get a Ph.D. in creative writing and write historical novels.”
Favorite Ex.Ed trips include following the Ute in Four Corners and Utah while most treasured memories include participation in two school musicals: “I played Auntie Em in the ‘Wizard of Oz' and Henriette in ‘South Pacific,' ” she said.
During high school, Kelsey Risjord “spent a lot of time playing piano,” a hobby she started at the age of seven. Some of her favorite memories from AHS include “laughing with friends,” and her freshman year Ex.Ed. trip which took the group rafting on the Green River (where she watched her “best friend fight with another girl”).
Kelsey will head to the Art Institute of Denver in the fall to study fashion retail and marketing. In the meantime, you can catch her at the Quicksilver shop in downtown Aspen.
Matthew Smith was editor of Nepsa Merge for some time during school and enjoyed competing on the debate team. Like Kelsey Risjord, his favorite Ex.Ed. trip was rafting the Green River during his freshman year. When asked about summer plans, he replied “sleep and take a trip to Hawaii.”
Matthew just might need to rest up before he heads to Colorado State University in Fort Collins to study engineering.
For Brianna Morse, favorite high school memories are “going to celebrate at Boogie's after finals are over, hanging out at lunch with friends, getting to know the teachers and being able to (participate) in experiential education trips.”
Brianna filled her four years of school with plenty of sports, participating in cross country running, ice hockey, track, Model UN, editing the literary magazine and Pathfinder angles. Her other hobbies include movies, knitting, and art.
This fall, “I will be attending college at Middlebury College in Vermont. I am interested in languages, business, history, and law.”
Immediately following graduation, Brianna and her family will be taking a vacation. “After that, I am going to look for a job for the rest of the summer,” she said.
Kyle Feuer is the salutatorian for Aspen High School's class of 2010.
During the school year, he played Varsity tennis, volunteered with Challenge Aspen, participated in clubs such as Model UN, Earth Group, and Action in Africa, and was the Vice President of the Senior Class.
“I enjoy being outdoors and creating art. My favorite memories of high school are those special moments with my close friends where we can laugh at and with each other,” he said.
In the fall, Kyle will enroll in the University of Pennsylvania, where his major is yet undecided. Kyle has a big summer of travel on tap: He is going to Mexico with a group of friends, then Sweden to visit his grandmother, then Cape Cod for a month with friends and family.
JoAnna Coffey participated in alpine skiing with the Aspen Valley Ski Club and was part of the Varsity Alpine Ski Team at Aspen High School. A member of the National Honor Society, JoAnna will be attending the University of New Hampshire this fall, where she will be competing on UNH's Division I Alpine Ski Racing team. Alpine Conservation will be her emphasis and “After college I would like to have a job in environmental sustainability with the Aspen Skiing Co.”
Favorite high school memories “were the Ex. Ed. trips that I went on and all of the different places I traveled for skiing.”
This summer she plans on “working, traveling, skiing, and preparing for the next journey in my life.”
Marion Couturier's journey will take her to McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where she plans to study humanities, languages and fine arts. She is looking at a major in international relations and a minor in Russian studies.
After graduation, “I will look forward to my last summer in Aspen, spend time with my friends and family, and work part-time at the Cos Bar and my father's restaurant” (Grappa, in Golden, Colo.).
Marion was one busy lady during her high school years, taking part in Varsity dance team, Dance Progressions and Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. She also joined the Model United Nations club for three years and was part of the Buddy Program and National Honor Society for two years.
She said one of her favorite memories from high school was “my first trip to New York City with the Model UN club during my sophomore year.” The following summer, she participated in a service trip to Romania with the international service club. Best Ex.Ed trip was the Bay Area Bike Tour in San Francisco during Marion's freshman year.
Graduate Chris Dreher participated in many extracurricular activities during high school, including baseball, hockey, volunteering for National Honor Society and launching rockets.
“My favorite memory at AHS was my Junior and Senior Ex-Ed trips. I had a sailing trip in Santa Barbara, and rafting in Cataract Canyon. I also enjoyed all of my science classes, along with wood shop and ball-sports class,” Chris said.
In the fall, he plans on attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla., where Chris hopes to study aerospace engineering and maybe learn how to become a pilot.
His summer plans look less serious: “I am traveling to the East Coast to see my relatives and my sister,” he said. Also before moving to Florida, he hopes to play baseball and make some time for sailing.
During all four years of high school, Lucie Shore lettered in the sport of Figure Skating. “It is a rigorous program involving many competitions, shows, tests, and service work,” she said.
A member of dance team each year, Lucie also took part in Dance Progressions. Her other activities include the Action in Africa club, Beyond Boarders club, and booster club. Cast in the Aspen Community Theatre production of “Chicago” during the fall of 2008, Lucie somehow found free time to go skiing and hiking, and spending time with her friends.
Ex.Ed trips took Lucie to Ashland, Ore. (for the Shakespeare festival), the Grand Tetons (to hike and reside in a “beautiful cabin”), San Francisco (backpacking to Point Reyes) and Chicago, where she studied interior design.
“My other favorite memory was going to Bariloche, Argentina, for an intensive language program in the summer of 2008. I stayed with an amazing host family while studying Spanish and enjoying the beauty of Patagonia.” Back home, Lucie has great memories of attending school dances, performing and socializing at football and basketball games, as well as “spending countless hours in the art room with everything from oil paint to clay.”
Lucie's summer plans include traveling to Mexico with classmates and visiting Angora Lake Resort near Lake Tahoe. She'll earn her stay this summer through teaching skating lessons at the ARC and baby-sitting. She has been accepted at Santa Clara University where Lucie plans on majoring in Public Health Science and study Spanish.
During his high school career, Kevin Mehall received an internship at the Aspen Science Center, which may have had a profound impact on his life as he is off to the Olin College of Engineering this fall. There, Kevin will study Electrical and Computer Engineering, he said.
First, though, he will take part in computer consulting, Web design and will likely tutor some students this summer. Hiking, biking and skating were among Kevin's athletic interests during school and its likely you'll see him out and about before he leaves for college.
For Kelcee Corwin, high school held “too many memorable times to count.” But she did mention Spirit Week as one such memorable event. Kelcee was a member of “various clubs,” including ice hockey.
She is off to the University of Alabama this fall, where Kelcee plans on studying Communications, Public Relations and/or Journalism, she said. Immediately after school is out her plans include traveling, working and “spending time with my friends,” she added.
Rachel Stout earned letters in Figure Skating, Dance Team and was a member of both the National Honor Society and Action in Africa. Her favorite Ex.Ed Trip was the rail-served Amtrak trip to San Francisco, which included a visit to the Monterey Aquarium. Closer to home, Rachel savored her Field Day activities. “It was great being with the whole school and getting to know kids from the other grades,” she said.
Come fall, Rachel heads to the University of Colorado at Boulder, where she hopes to major in studio art, especially drawing and design. She'll join many of her classmates on the Senior Trip to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. After that, it's time to get a job but Rachel also plans some time for relaxing before heading off to university.
Brianna Mordkin's extracurricular activities during high school would fill anyone's calendar. They include: Dance Progressions, Outreach, National Honor Society, skiing and the high school ski team. Like several of her classmates, she loved Spirit Week and was also a big fan on Ex.Ed. On this year's trip, she took a backpack voyage from San Francisco to Point Reyes. Brianna will return to California this summer to visit family and will spend the rest of her time off in Snowmass Village, she said. Her choice of college is the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Molly Keelty's extracurricular activities in school included participation on the ski team and the girls' lacrosse team. In fact, her lacrosse memories figure as some of her favorite high school recollections.
Molly will be enjoying a “gap year” before deciding on her future education or travel plans. In the meantime, “I plan to enjoy my summer here,” she said.
Abbi Cook's future plans were not shared with the paper, but while at AHS she played soccer and ski raced on the high school team.
What are their plans for the future? The Snowmass Sun polled the students, asking about their extracurricular activities, favorite high school memories, summer jobs and path to higher education. Here's some of what we learned:
