Lynette Kidd Schlepp, Nikki Boxer, Cooper Campisi and Mike Monroney prepare for the opening of Aspen Community Theatre's “The Music Man,” an ambitious local production featuring the talents of 44 local actors. The musical opens Nov. 5 at the Aspen District Theatre.
This fall, Aspen Community Theatre returns to the theme of community spirit by presenting “The Music Man,” a celebration of small-town American life. It opens Thursday at the Aspen District Theatre.
The musical by Meredith Wilson tells the story of traveling salesman Harold Hill, and his visit to a small Iowa town in 1912 where he meets and falls in love with the willful librarian, Marian Paroo. Hill convinces the town that unless they adopt his revolutionary music program, the youngsters of River City will be forever doomed.
In 1957, the show became a hit on Broadway, winning six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and running for 1,375 performances. The cast album, which includes classics like “76 Trombones,” “Ya Got Trouble” and “Till There Was You,” was the winner of the first Grammy Award for “Best Original Cast Album.”
Aspen Community Theatre's cast of 44 local actors and actresses lead by Mike Monroney as Harold Hill and Nikki Boxer as Marian Paroo also includes a roster of Snowmass Villagers, including Laura Anderson, Nina Gabianelli, Calli Ferguson and Tammy Baar. Look for Tom Hills in the orchestra.
Directing and choreographing for A.C.T. is John Goss. The production staff includes musical director David Dyer, conductor Wendy Larson, set designer Tom Ward, costume designer Kathleen Albert, lighting designer Loren Wilder, and sound designer Michael Munroe. “The Music Man” is produced by Rita Hunter and Jody Hecht.
All performances are at District Theatre Nov. 5-7 and Nov. 12-14 at 7 p.m. Matinees are on Nov. 8 and 15 at 2 p.m.
Tickets prices for adults are $18 for evening performances and $16 for matinees. Children's tickets (12 and under) are $14 for evenings and $12 for matinees. Tickets may be purchased at The Wheeler Box Office, 920-5770, and at www.aspenshowtickets.com.
