Just in case you haven't noticed: The way we do business has changed and the sooner we recognize that fact and adapt to it, the better off we'll be.
During Friday's 2009 Aspen/Snowmass State of the Real Estate & Development Economy Symposium and Panel Discussion, a team of panelists as well as a best-selling author will address current market conditions and how the best ways to react to these changes.
The panel takes place from 3-5 p.m. at the Doerr-Hosier Center (at the Aspen Institute) and is hosted by BJ Adams and Company Real Estate. Tickets cost $20 per person and may be purchased in advance by calling or through the offices of BJ Adams and Company, next to Alpine Bank, in either Snowmass Village or Aspen.
During the first hour, Dr. Jim Taylor of the Harrison Group in Waterbury, Conn., will offer the keynote address and speak about his book, “The New Elite: Inside the Minds of the Truly Wealthy.”
Among other things, Taylor will explain why Aspen has endured as one of the most desirable destinations in the country for the world's affluent and what might threaten its appeal in the future. According to Taylor, “The wealthy today are poorly understood, not only by the media and the average American but also by the professional marketer of luxury and high-end products.”
Andrew Ernemann, one of the brokers organizing the event, noted, “Realizing the difference in the world right now, there's kind of a need, desire and hunger out there to know where we are and where we are going.”
The heart of the two-hour event will be a panel discussion of local business and community leaders, moderated by John Sarpa, a principal with Centurion Partners and chairman of the Aspen Valley Hospital Board. Panel members include: Chris Bendon, Community Director for the City of Aspen; Markey Butler, Town of Snowmass Village Councilmember; Jody Cooper, home mortgage consultant with Wells Fargo; David Corbin, VP of Planning and Development for Aspen Skico; John Cottle, principal with Cottle Carr Yaw Architects; Randy Gold, MAI appraiser and owner of Aspen Appraisal Group; David Harris, VP, Land Title Guarantee; Dwayne Romero, CEO of Related WestPac and Aspen City Councilman; and Tom Todd, partner with the Holland & Hart law firm.
The symposium on the state of the real estate economy in Aspen/Snowmass came about, according to BJ Adams, founder of the real estate firm hosting the event, “because we felt there was a real hunger, especially among local business people and, in particular, amongst second-home owners who aren't here every day to keep their fingers on the pulse of the valley, for information about not only what's truly going on in the current and difficult real estate/development/lending environment, but also for direction for moving forward in a way that insures our community's long-term viability.”
In addition, brief information about current and predicted real estate trends will be presented, perceived myths about what's going on in the marketplace will be challenged, and both buyers and sellers will hear recommendations for successfully navigating the changing real estate scene.
Said Ernemann, “The Roaring Fork Valley and our resort economy are facing some of the most daunting challenges we've seen in the last two decades. More than ever, we believe it's important for our business community to come together and, shoulder to shoulder, to begin to work collectively to develop solutions that will insure the continued financial vitality of our valley.”
He also noted that there's reason to be optimistic and that there are at present “a lot of opportunities out there.” A cocktail reception will follow the two-hour event, and Dr. Taylor will be available for book signing in the Barksdale Lobby.
