The Aspen Winternational organizing committee has announced a schedule shift as organizers, sponsors and FIS officials collaborate to bring America’s women’s alpine World Cup event to a larger global audience.
Originally slated to begin the Friday after Thanksgiving, the event will now open on Saturday, Nov. 29, with a giant slalom followed by a slalom on Sunday. Both races will air live on prime time in European markets and on Sunday, Nov. 30, at 1 p.m. (Eastern time) on NBC.
Headlining the event for the U.S. Ski Team is World Cup overall and downhill champion Lindsey Vonn of Vail and Olympic giant slalom gold medalist Julia Mancuso from Olympic Valley, Calif. as Aspen hosts the women’s World Cup for the fifth consecutive year.
“Aspen is one of America’s premier venues for alpine ski racing, providing an outstanding spectacle for both fans on the slope and watching from home,” said U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association Vice President Events Calum Clark. “Live European coverage in key times for our alpine World Cups is a critical element to the ongoing success of the events here in the U.S. and the World Cup tour as a whole.”
Aspen Mountain has a strong ski racing tradition, hosting the first World Championships in the United States in 1950. This year’s event marks its 40 years of World Cup racing in Aspen. The mountain was a part of the tour’s inaugural season the winter of 1967/68.
“Once again we are kicking off our season with the excitement of World Cup ski racing,” said John Rigney, Aspen/Snowmass vice president of sales and events. “Having our races broadcast live into millions of homes in Europe and around the world is an excellent way to get the message out that Aspen/Snowmass is open and the snow is falling. It will be an action-packed weekend of ski racing, parties, concerts and fun.”
