There might be one speck of white snow left on the Wall or the Cirque — the last remaining evidence of a season which was nothing short of epic.

But now, with the dramatic change of seasons and scenery, Snowmass Ski Area is ready to continue to accommodate the extreme lifestyle of some of its visitors.

For the sixth consecutive year, Snowmass will play host to the 2008 U.S. Mountainboarding Championships, sponsored by MBS Mountainboards. The event is set to begin on July 24 and will run until July 27.

Directly derived from snowboarding, mountainboarding is growing in popularity around the nation, and is becoming a well-established extreme sport.

MBS Mountainboards is considered to be the pioneer of the sport, going back to 1991 when two friends from California invented a sport and devised a business plan to go with it. Co-founders Jason Lee and Pat McConnell created the sport of mountainboarding to help snowboarders stay in shape and hone their skills during the offseason. Some 17 years later, the company still dominates the industry.

Tagged as the nation’s largest mountainboard competition, the championship at Snowmass features the best of the best from across the country competing for cash and numerous prizes.

A well-rounded and diverse competition, the U.S. Mountainboarding Championship will let riders showcase their talents in the Mass Start Downhill, Dirt Boarder Cross (DBX) and Dirt Freestyle events.

DBX consists of heats of four mountainboaders scratching and clawing their way to the finish line on the custom-built dirt track. It’s a challenge made up of rollers, bermed turns and tabletop jumps.

The Dirt Freestyle event is very similar to the commonly-known X Games “Big Air” competition. As the riders launch themselves into the blue skies of Snowmass, they will be judged on style, technique, difficulty and the amplitude of their tricks.

This extreme extravaganza officially kicks off on July 24, with the return of the much appreciated Camp Aspen/Snowmass Mountainboard Camp, featuring top-notch coaching from the best in the business. Professional competitors Jereme Leafe, Kody Stewart and Akoni Kama will be conducting the camp.

“The kids just love being around these guys,” said Sue Way, a camp organizer in Snowmass. “They always respect them and have a great time out there. They’re learning from the best names in the sport.”
