Volunteers are an important part of a community.
For Snowmass Village, volunteers are becoming a cornerstone of the community, with responsibilities that include everything from trail work and gardening in the summer to setting up and taking down holiday lights in the winter.
The town is in search of more volunteers to help with areas such as the Ice Age Discovery Center docents and administrative assistance.
“Our volunteers help with basic needs when we had to make some (budget) cuts,” said Lesley Compagnone, Snowmass Village community relations officer.
And those who volunteer for the town now are being rewarded for their time, Compagnone said.
On May 2, the Snowmass Town Council approved a $5,000 budget to form a volunteer program based on the needs of budget constraints and layoffs, Compagnone said.
But there is incentive.
Because the majority of volunteer opportunities are on a seasonal basis, volunteer hours will be tabulated and tracked on a monthly basis, for the summer season of June through September and the winter season of December through March.
And those incentives include a five-day Classic Ski Pass, which goes to a volunteer who has completed 80 hours a season at $259, or five hours a week every week for a designated season, or a Viceroy package, which includes one free night at the Viceroy Hotel in the offseason following a completion of 48 hours of volunteer service at $225, or three hours a week every week for a designated season.
Other incentives include a 20-visit punch pass to the recreation center and a town of Snowmass Village jacket and hat.
“We need help with the holiday lights, for example, setting them up and taking them down,” Compagnone said. “People can come in and help us file, which is a huge help to us.”
Volunteers are needed for areas such as picking up litter along a trail for Adopt-A-Trail and Adopt-A-Park.
The Snowmass Village Recreation Center will train and certify volunteers to be attendants at the climbing wall for 21⁄2 hours of “open climb” during the week.
Others are needed to help with special events such as the Chili Pepper and Brew Fest during the summer.
